#20 GARY MATTHEWS

FAVORITE BRAVES PLAYERS OF THE 1980'S
#20 GARY MATTHEWS
ATLANTA BRAVES 1977-1980

I ranked Gary Matthews number eleven on my 70's list which seems about right. However, number twenty-one on my 80's list seems a little high in retrospect. The guy only played in 1980 for the Braves, after all. Oh well, it isn't an exact science and he was definitely a favorite. Let's just keep him at number twenty.

1980 season highlight had to be his four-hit, two homer game off the Pirates on August 26, 1980. The two homers were off two pretty good pitchers, Bert Blyleven and Kent Tekulve. The Tekulve homer was the game winner in the 10th.

Feeling old: When I moved to Mobile, Alabama in 1998, I went to several games of the minor league team The Bay Bears, which featured a young player named Gary Matthews Jr.! Jr. went on to have a twelve year major league career of his own.
