Joe Niekro had a very nice 221 win career in the majors, with his best years coming with the Houston Astros. Before became an all-star with the Astros, Joe pitched a couple of years with the Braves and his big brother Phil. Joe won only five games for the Braves during his two years with the team before being sold to the Astros for $35,000. My favorite stat on Joe has got to be that in 972 career at bats he had only one home run. And who was that home run off of? Why, big brother Phil Niekro of course! His May 29, 1976 blast at the launching pad started a late rally for Houston and the Astros and Joe ended up besting Phil and the Braves 4-3 that night. I would also guess that Joe probably never let Phil live that down.
Joe Niekro passed away at age 61 in 2006.
